Fishing Reports & PhotosTOO MANY BITES OF WRONG KIND!
Dick, Melanie and Ed Schroeder, from Muskegun, MI had plenty of action yesterday, but mostly of the wrong kind, as the bonitos (false albacore) and bonito mackerels ate us up all day....could hardly keep the Obsession in gear.....the family did catch a dozen sailfish, including a father, mom & son triple header to end the day. Have today off, and then will be fishing the next 26 days.
![]() FISHING TURNS ON WITH ROUGH SEAS!
Greg Hagen and Mac, who are down here for the sold out 3 day Widespread Panic shows at a Playa de Carmen resort, fished with me today and though the seas were so rough that we could only make 11-14 knots going out, and though the day started so slow I was thinking of trying to run north to where some fish were yesterday, things turned on in late morning and action was great till they said they had enough......the two of them released 32 sailfish, including a quadruple header and three triple headers.
![]() THEY ALL HOOKED THEIR OWN FISH
Ernie Blake and crew, on their second day of sailfishing ever, all hooked a lot of their own fish today, catching 32 sailfish out of 60+ bites.....a 6-7 ft swell spread out was much more comfortable then yesterday and action was great in the morning and a good pick the rest of the day......the guys caught on quad and three triple headers and we are looking forward to a nice dinner in town tonight with them....adios!!

Ernie Blake with friends Ralph & David from Colorodo and Jeff from Virginia Beach had rough sea conditions but good fishing, including a great morning bite, releasing 20 sailfish and coming in early.

Titus & Charlma Kamp and Tracy & Terry Dykstra had decent action releasing 15 sailfish, with both Charlma & Tracy catching their first sailfish ever.
SAILFISH FINALLY SHOW UP IN NEW GROUNDS!
We have been fishing 4-6 miles off the beach for the last two weeks, and while this is certainly good for my fuel economy, we have been beating on the same bunch of fish with no others having been found to the north, and this location was not going to hold up for long... we had a good morning, releasing 11 before noon, but my action dried up after a while and others were not seeing much......fortunately one of Anthony's dive boats found some sign of fish up north and when we got there we found a lot of bait and good sailfish action, ending up the day with John Carson, Jordan Blount and friends from eastern North Carolina releasing 20 sailfish and missing plenty more!!
![]() TEENAGERS CATCH MOST OF THE SAILFISH
John Knight & son Tyler and Todd Sutton & son Tucker had no problem with the choppy seas (wore my old butt out) and had action all day, releasing 20 sailfish out of 30+ bites, with Tyler & Tucker catching most of them, including 2 double headers and a triple header......Tucker even wired a bunch of fish in the afternoon, and has a swivel mark on his chest to prove it.....caught several mahi mahi, and joined Todd and Tucker and family up at Ballyhoo Bar for some fish and chips, fish vera cruz and fish with garlic.

John Knight and 13 year old son Tyler, who fished down here with us last year, along with Todd Sutton and 14 year old son Tucker fished today with Tyler and Todd each catching a half dozen or more sailfish showing great angling skills for young guys, and we released 18 sailfish out of 30+ bites.
![]() THE LAST OF 4 GREAT DAYS OF FISHING
Tom & Linda Noonan, from Allentown, PA & Mike and Heidi, from Harrisburg, PA had good action on their last of 4 days of fishing, releasing 18 sailfish....had at least 30 bites, but had tough luck, hooking several triple headers but only coming up with one each time.....Regardless, they caught over 90 sailfish over the 4 days, and we all enjoyed a great meal of fried, Vera Cruz and in garlic grouper, ceaser salad, rice and fries at the legendary Ballyhoo Bar.
![]() SLOW START BUT A GREAT AFTERNOON!
The day started off with sails mixed with bonitos chasing flying fish, birds and balls of bait, and lots of sailfish marks, but not many bites.....as the morning progressed we worked offshore and kept marking fish but finally they started biting and it seemed like it got better as the day went on.....I think we wore Tom & Mike out, their third day in a row with one more tomarrow....lots of multiple hookups....pulled off a fair number of fish but had continuous action for 4 hours, the guys doing a great job catching 31 sailfish out of 50 or so bites....and the weather was great!

Tom Noonan, wife Linda and Mike & Heidi enjoyed a calm day and very good morning action, releasing 20 sailfish including several husband and wife double headers.
![]() FINALLY BACK IN THE GROOVE!
After two days of 30 knot winds and 9-10 ft seas, and everyone tied to the dock, the wind and seas finally moderated and we got back offshore again....Tom Noonan and partner, from Pennsylvania, left their wives on the beach due to 7 ft seas, and enjoyed good action all day, with 40 + bites.....had tough luck with several tripleheaders, coming up with one or none on several occasions, but still released 21 sailfish, including a double header to end the day!

Russ Kostinos and his crew from Virginia Beach fished today, but weather got terrible.....25-30 knot winds and torrential rain, so we came in before noon after catching everyone a sailfish or two.

![]() Deckhand Richard's family, including parents Mary Francis & John, Alex and Cindy & Mary fished with us today and everyone caught at least 2 sailfish, in total releasing 13 sails and coming in early for happy hour......had a terrible morning as the damm frigit birds would not leave us alone for 2 hours....were around a fish spot but could not keep baits in the water as the frigits grabbed them as fast as we could get them out....got so bad we had two frigit birds hooked on one line.....had to relocate but got on fish after a while and had decent action in the afternoon, with everyone catching at least two sails..... For Sindy, it was her first fish ever. ![]() MARYLAND BOYS RETURN FOR ANOTHER HALF DAY!
Matt Wagner & Joe Jones returned for another half day of fishing and caught 10 sailfish, which was somewhat disappointing as the critters were jumping everywhere on a beautiful calm day but just not biting real well.

Matt Wagner, Chris, Joe, Omar and crew from Maryland booked me the day before, and it paid off as he and his crew caught 28 sailfish, with fantastic morning action, including two triple headers and a at one time 5 fish on, of which we caught 4.
![]() JANUARY 9: FUN FISHING WITH BOAT CREWS!
Richard & I went fishing with Will Ross on the Haphazard with some other Carolina boat crews and had a great warm up day catching 22 out of 27 sailfish in half a day..... I held my own, hooking & catching 5 out of 6 bites......
WE MADE IT!
Left Miami yesterday morning at 5 AM......chugged to Key West.... got there around noon.....slipped into a commercial dock for some less expensive fuel ($4.51/gal in Key West), took on 500 gallons to give us 720 for the crossing, Richard & I bought 5 lbs of stone crabs, and off we went with 3 other boats....weather was beautiful and crossing easy.... pullled out of Key West at 2 PM and pulled into Enrique Lima's Marina at 10 AM..... calm seas the whole way..... curtains open and no spray on the boat....just the way we like it..... Richard & I were greeted at the dock by the Ballyhoo Bar & Grill waiter with a shot of TEQUILA to welcome us back to our second home..... can't imagine how they knew we might like a quickie....... sometimes life is very good!!
FISHING IS OUTSTANDING DOWN HERE RIGHT NOW......one boat had 70 sailfish bites yesterday...... have Wednesday, Thursday & Friday open... temperture is 80 degrees & the sun is shining! ![]() HAPPY NEW YEAR!
Deckhand Richard Wright and I are tied up at Golden Isle Marina, St Simmons Island, Ga. Our New Year's day run to Southport Marina near Cape Fear, NC was nice but yesterday, with 20-25 knot NW winds, was wet and wild......a long 240 miles and cold 12 hours! With gale warnings and 25-35 knot winds today from here to Cape Canaveral and below, we stayed tied up today to lick our wounds and will head south to Ft Pierce, FL tomarrow, with plans to cross the Gulf of Mexico sometime between this coming Friday and Sunday.

Five weeks after we put her in the shop, we rolled the OBSESSION back to the haul out, and put her back in the water today....all went surprisingly well, and the paint job came out great......Vernon Gilbert & his crew did a fantastic job for a fair and reasonable price...... the only down side to the whole process, as another captain said to me today was that the old girl will never look any better than she does right now!!
