Fishing Reports & PhotosTHEY WANTED DOLPHIN!
Jimmy Reily & crew, from around Philadelphia, loaded the boat with tuna yesterday, and today wanted to go dolphin fishing......took a while to find some good conditions, but when we did it was game on!! In between eating some great meatball subs (these Philly boys always feed us well), the guys boated a beautiful catch of 7-20 lb mahi mahi on light standup tackle.
![]() RAN OVER THEM AGAIN!
We found water up in 50 fathoms which looked good but lots of grass, so we set out in 100 fathoms and had scattered tuna and dolphin action most of the morning, but when we worked back inshore into shallower water we hit 5 yellowfin and then a few more, and Jim Reily & crew from Philadelphia said they had enough fish for their first of 3 fishing days this week, so we headed in around noon with nearly a box full of 20 -35# yellowfin tuna and some 10 lb mahi mahi.
![]() BIG TUNA ON MOTHERS DAY!!
We set out just offshore of the other charter boats on Mothers Day, intending to make a loop around a good edge and then swing inshore where there were a few bites in shallower water when we had a few bites on some longer baits..... Randy Hanzlick & Brent Nase, from Virginia hoped in the chairs, but did not realize what they were getting into at first, but not for long as the fish didn't stop till they both had little line left on their reels..... Brent had a heavier rod, and after 40 minutes boated 181 lb bigeye tuna...... Randy boated his 162 lb bigeye after a grueling hour & 40 minute battle. They yellowfin fishing had slowed up so we made a few more circles in deeper water and damned if we didn't hook 2 more bigeyes....the first got off quick, but the second stayed on and Brenda Moyer, from PA, battled in my mind the toughest tuna pound for pound, and did a great job boating her 137 lb bigeye tuna after an hour 20 minutes.... all earned citations for bigeyes over 100 lbs! ![]() ANOTHER SATURDAY STRUGGLE!
Weather was beautiful, seas were calm and it seemed as if every charterboat and outboard from here to DC was fishing in the same spot today.... someone said they counted 90 boats.
We started south of the fleet hoping to catch a mahi, and found some good conditions, but not many fish so we worked up to the tuna fleet and spent the rest of the day dodging boats..... the fish were remarkably cooperative considering all the propellers that drove over them, and Ron Belchar and crew, from Tidewater, VA boated a nice mess of 20 - 45 lb yellowfin to go along with a handful of mahi-mahi. ![]() GREAT TUNA ACTION!
Mike Kuberski & crew fished with me back when I was mating for Joe Monds a hundred years or so ago, and they have fished with Joe & his son Butch the last few years, but joined us today and said they would come back again in the future.....things weren't looking so good the first few hours as boats around us hooked tunas but we couldn't get a bite, but things heated up quick for us finally and when it did, for the next two hours it was game on..... hooked a double header..... boated them..... sped up and hooked six, caught 5 of them.....got going and circled back.... hit the mark and hooked 7, released one, lost one, boated 5....then a single then hooked 7 more...... filled the box, the ice chest and had our limit and headed in early with no more room.....tunas in the 30-40# range.

![]() The photo was from Kevin Mahoney when he fished with us in Mexico this past winter. NO CHARTER TODAY SO RUTH ANN HANDED ME THE 'HONEY DO' LIST!
A few boats fished yesterday and had great tuna fishing, some coming in early with a box full. We have a charter on Wednesday, but openings on Thursday and next Monday. Meanwhile I will be home doing some plumbing.
![]() SOMETIMES LEAVING LATE IS NOT A PROBLEM!
Anyone who has fished with me over the years knows that I like to get an early start.... being the first boat out in the morning suits me just fine. On weekends, with hordes of charter boats, private boats and outboards, I really, really like to get an early start, which was the plan yesterday.... however David Cook and crew, from New Jersey, played one game of cards to many, and overslept..... my wake-up call got them to the boat after ever other boat had left..... I was not happy, but the weather was beautiful and off we went..... I plugged in a spot to try to hit a weedline, but after watching my radar, I ended up 12 miles south of my original target, and the last boat to start fishing.... luckily I found a few open miles and by luck of the draw there were some fish there, so David Cook & crew, from New Jersey had excellent action boating a very nice catch of 5-20# mahi-mahi on light tackle to start the day..... a better start than I expected.
The day before there were some afternoon tuna bites, so we worked towards those grounds around noon, and got there just as a few boats had hit some tuna..... we were working towards them when we hooked a couple of 30 lb fish..... got going again and I saw tunas busting behind me chasing flying fish..... got close to that and WHAM, tunas were boiling on all our baits and teasers..... we had 7 bites, hooked 6 and boated 5 of them...... caught a few more in an exciting afternoon as the tunas came up busting periodically the rest of the day and everyone would charge that way to get a pass..... David and crew ended up with a nice catch and since they did such a good job boating fish, I decided not to hit them with my 'Saturday late to boat fee'! ![]() DOLPHIN ON LIGHT TACKLE!
Brian Allen & his crew, from Cary NC had an action filled morning of light tackle mahi-mahi fishing, boating fish in the 5-20 lb class range on standup tackle....all good anglers, they were helping Richard rig baits and hook fish. A few tuna were caught in the afternoon but we did not get any bites from them....maybe tomarrow!
![]() DAY OFF TODAY SO I AM TRYING TO GET RUSSIAN OLIVES UNDER CONTROL!
![]() DOLPHIN IN THE MORNING, TUNA IN THE AFTERNOON!
George Erat, from MD with crew Mark, Eric & J.B., from Leesburg, VA, & Mike & Ken from MD, ignored the rough seas and enjoyed an action packed day. After a slow start, we found a current edge with some grass in it, and shortly had a bunch of dolphin after us.... caught 4 out of 6 at one time, and then had a steady one or two get after us for two hours..... guys up north were getting some tuna bites, so we picked up and ran up there, and hadn't been set out for 10 minutes when we hooked 2 but only boated one.....got going again and shortly hooked 6 but only caught three..... not a good rate of success but good action.....then we hooked 4 but only caught 2.....anyway need some better hooks but we had a lot of fun, and ate well too....damm if they didn't have some fine homemade honey cured ham!
![]() WHAT A DISAPPOINTMENT !
After filling the box with yellowfin tuna on Saturday, we had great expectations yesterday.....water conditions were similar, not a lot of boats, which is always good, and everyone marked some fish in the morning. Saturday the bite started around late morning, so we patiently worked the area till about 1 PM when we realized it just was not going to happen....no one had tuna bite, so with our tails between our legs, we did some bottom fishing to salvage a frustrating day with a limit of gray tilefish for Ron Beard, Jeff Holt & crew from the Holten Corp in Roanoke, NC.
![]() TUNA! TUNA! TUNA!
David Tooker & crew, from Connecticut, fishing their second day, had enough mahi-mahi and wanted to focus on tuna.....we started where we found some yesterday, but none of the charterboats had any bites, so while most boats got in the blue water and started picking at the mahi-mahi, we worked south looking for tuna.....found none to the south, so worked back north and damm if we didn't find them right where we started the day.... hit them 3 times, boating 5-6 each time to end of with a box full of 30-35 lb yellowfin.
![]() ROUGH WEATHER DOLPHIN FISHING AGAIN!
David Tooker & crew, from Connecticut, thought nothing about the rough seas as we had good action on 5-15 lb dolphin the first half of the day, and then went looking for yellowfin tuna which have been elusive of late.....we did find some fish late in the day and boated on 40 lb yellowfin. Will focus on them tomarrow as there was a better sign late today.
![]() GLAD FOR THE MAHI MAHI!!
Only a few charter boats fished yesterday, the first day of us got out since the weekend, after a stretch of windy weather.... conditions looked good for tuna fishing on our water temperature charts and when we got to the fishing grounds, but once again, when we think we have it figured out, mother nature shows us we don't.... not a single tuna was boated by anyone......however, as is so often the case around here, if one critter ain't biting, another one likely is, which was the case for Alen Zenka & his family from Michigan, as they enjoyed a pretty day, saw plenty of porpoise, pilot whales, big sea turtles, and had a good time boating a nice catch of 5-15 lb mahi-mahi on stand up light tackle.
![]() WHAT A DIFFERENCE A DAY MAKES!
Adam Rowbotham (from England & New York City) & friend Israel, from Mexico & NYC, had great expectations of tuna after yesterdays catch, as did I until i looked at the water temperture chart..... as usaul, things had changed and the water was alot cooler over the area where the tuna were on Friday....with no bites for the fleet to start the day, we got on a grass line/Gulf Steam change and followed it all day long and had steady action with 2 or 3 dolphin getting after us every 20 minutues or so....by the end of the day Adam & Israel had picked out a nice catch of 5-20 lb dolphin all on light standup tackle.
![]() ANOTHER OBSESSION LATE INNING RALLY!
After a week of bad weather, a few boats got out on Thursday, but did not come up with much, so I headed south of the fleet to spread out and look around..... we caught a wahoo along a change, but not much other sign of fish.... a few boats hit some tunas north of me and I started working that way, then another boat hit the bigeyes and I was getting nervous but kept working up there for an hour over good bottom and good water, but no bites.... got up to the fleet and had a lot of catching up to do as some boats had caught 4-5 tunas each...... trolled around for a while and then got whammed..... John Gray & his crew, from New Jersey sprung into action as we had 8 poles bent over..... one a bonito, one a small throwback yellowfin and the other 6 were 25-40 lb yellowfin...... thank the lord!!! Trolled around for another 2 hours with no action... scattered bite for boats around me, and then at 2:30, as I was working north trying to stay in some warmer water a big tuna creamed the teaser, then the 2 flat lines and the short riggers all bent over...... one undersized yellowfin, one 40 lb yellowfin, and surprise surprise, a 97# and a 102# bigeye tunas, the latter earning Tom DePaulis his first NC citation.
![]() SEASONS FIRST MEATFISH GRAND SLAM!!
Brian Gunnelson & crew, from Pennsylvania, put the pressure on us first thing in the morning telling us their last fishing trip in Tennessee they didn't catch anything & were hoping for better today.... I told them we had a much better chance to catch a tuna today, so off we went.....seas were rough but the guys were tough.... water conditions looked great & we had a some good marks of tuna on the bottom machine, but for most of the day all we could do was get a single bite along.... did catch a pair of mahi mahi early and then later on, a 25 lb wahoo..... finally, late in the day, with time running out, I went over a spot I had marked fish several times earlier with little success, and marked them again but this time they had their feeding hats on as we hooked 7, pulled off one, threw back one small one, and boated 5 30-38 lb yellowfin.....a great way to end a good day!!
![]() TOO MANY BOATS ON SATURDAYS!
Weather was beautiful, and fishing was hit or miss with lots of boats fishing a thin strip off good water, but Richard & I had a great time fishing with Derek, Doug, Marc,Bobby, Mark, and John all from the Blue Water Fishing Club in Florence SC. Here are a few pics John Evans sent me from the days fishing.
